Lost at Birth = The perfect song for Terminator Salvation

About half an hour after seeing Terminator Salvation my 6 year old Ipod shuffle (2gigs ftw!), with whom I have an ongoing conversation which is surprisingly animated, decided to show me what he thought would have been the perfect closing credits song for the movie. I had to agree.

"The Future holds nothing else but confrontation."
"Get back cause he wax the tracks the Terminator"

Clear the way for the prophets of rage
Engagin' on the stage, on a track
Tell jack stay in the back
I was born
Every level I'm on
You're warned
Just in case you forgot
I pump in kilowatts
To let 'em know which direction
To go what's up I wanna know
I test the front row
Forgiven the givin' while the livin' is livin' it up
So many people is sleepin' while standin' up
Not dressed to impress or fess it
That's it text to the brain like fedex
Treated one and the same
'cause the name of the game
Don't give 'em checks above necks
Some don't realize we're on the same side
Some livin in the city
Suburbs or projects
But we're livin' in a different time
Some speed, some lead
While some jus' pump rhymes
Then again all in da same gang
Info to flow
And heal all below
Let's go and find
The piece of mind that's taken
Or else the black
starts breakin'
Public enemy no.1

New Roots song: How I Got Over - Title track.

The 215 debuted their title track from their upcoming album How I Got Over last night on Fallon. I am going to let this one settle in a bit before I can properly review it. I remember disliking the Rising Up performance when they were promoting the Rising Down album and then it became one of my favourite songs on the album so...

Telling Stories

Original is better than the live I think. Here are both. Great song. Truly.

There is fiction in the space between
The lines on your page of memories
Write it down but it doesn't mean
You're not just telling stories

There is fiction in the space between
You and reality
You will do and say anything
To make your everyday life
Seem less mundane
There is fiction in the space between
You and me

There's a science fiction in the space between
You and me
A fabrication of a grand scheme
Where I am the scary monster
I eat the city and as I leave the scene
In my spaceship I am laughing
In your remembrance of your bad dream
There's no one but you standing

Leave the pity and the blame
For the ones who do not speak
You write the words to get respect and compassion
And for posterity
You write the words and make believe
There is truth in the space between

There is fiction in the space between
You and everybody
Give us all what we need
Give us one more sad sordid story
But in the fiction of the space between
Sometimes a lie is the best thing
Sometimes a lie is the best thing

Rising Down live - wow wow wee wa

I've seen 3 roots shows since Rising Down came out. Each time I waited patiently for them to play the title track "Rising Down". Unfortunately it wasn't in the cards. Nor was it on the playlist for the night. Today I came across this and can only say that the way they spice it up is better than I could have predicted. So tight. Nicely tied in with Rising Up in this clip too.

Enjoy.

And just to show the versatility and an excuse to ad an extra video:

The Grand Return - cut track from Rising Down album

I can't believe this. This song was cut from Rising Down. Damn. That's too bad. I know they snipped off that Birthday Girl song from the N.American release but I never heard this shit before. I like it.

Plus, wow, I really would have enjoyed seeing this live.

Q-tip: Let's Stride

Came across this today. Had never heard it before.
Going to see 'tip in July in Switzerland. Quite excited for that especially since I think The Renaissance is one of the best albums of 2009.

Pearl Jam - Got Some

Audio from the live performance they did on the very first episode of the new Tonight Show with Coco - a.k.a. Conan - a.k.a. The Cone Zone.

This song has grown on me. I think I needed to hear it more than see it to really soak it in because it's brand new. I wonder if it will be much different on the album? hmmm

When the stress burns my brain...

Just like Acid Raindrops...

Zee Avi

She has nice style and voice. I think it's great how musicians can get exposure and build a career with youtube and the webby. Lots of talent floating around.

Who? Well, it doesn't really matter.

I don't really know who this fool is. My guess is he has something to do with the R&B scene or he's a wanna be mc. Given the fact that his freestyle in this video is at a Flavour Flav level I'm fairly certain that if he is in fact an "mc" it won't be for very long.

At any rate, this is hilarious. Wait til the end. If you haven't seen this before, you're in for a treat.

Nyle - Let the beat build

Never heard of this guy til today. Good video and song. Shot in one take.

Nyle "Let The Beat Build" from Nyle on Vimeo.

Jigga - D.O.A

Death of Autotune. New Jigga. On some heavy electro-geetar. Nice.

Notice that he starts with

"No-ID on the track...now let the story begin."

In Kanye's song about Jay-z called Big Brother, Kanye says

"
My big brother was Big's brother
Used to be Dame and Bigs brother
Who was hip hop brother
Who was No I.D friend
No I.D My mentor
Now let the story begin"

The answer to the contest

I gave a hip hop head puzzle a few posts ago

SEE HERE - http://toblerusse.blogspot.com/2009/06/contest-name-that-reference.html -

Well, the answer is Jurassic 5. The song is Jurass Finish First.

One of their funnest songs to see live. It's a feel-good song and the beat makes you bump. Try not to nod your head to this. I dare ya.

Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing

One of my favourite bands. This live version is just a treat. Delicious.

You get a shiver in the dark
It's raining in the park but meantime
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowin' Dixie double four time
You feel alright when you hear that music ring

And now you step inside but you don't see too many faces
Comin' in out of the rain you hear the jazz go down
Competition in other places
Oh but the horns they blowin' that sound
Way on down south, way on down south London town

You check out Guitar George, he knows all the chords
Mind he's strictly rhythm he doesn't wanna make it cry or sing
Yes and an old guitar is all he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing

And Harry doesn't mind if he doesn't make the scene
He's got a daytime job, he's doin' alright
He can play the honky tonk like anything
Savin' it up for Friday night
With the Sultans... with the Sultans of Swing

And a crowd of young boys they're fooling around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They don't give a damn about any trumpet playing band
It ain't what they call rock and roll
And the Sultans... yeah the Sultans play Creole

And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
'Goodnight, now it's time to go home'
And he makes it fast with one more thing
'We are the Sultans... We are the Sultans of Swing'

What some songs do that sometimes go overlooked

The following is an example of how some of the more clever mc's in the game use their rhymes and lyrics to not only give surface level meanings, they also play with the words and disguise things.

J-live, perhaps the most underrated mc in hip hop, is a master of this sort of deception. I remember listening to Don't Play (from the album The Best Part) for the 739th time when suddenly the last line of the song hit me like a brick.

It goes...

You hear the same word twice and wanna file a complaint
Well check the order of the line that'll set things straight

Somewhere in my deep subconscious where a much more intelligent version of me exists, a voice poked through and said LISTEN!! Did you hear that? It means something.

So I played it again and realized that all of the rhyme couplets in the last verse were the same ones he used in the first verse but in reverse ascending order. How come I never saw/heard/realized it?

"You hear the same word twice and wanna file a complaint"?????

So check it out for yourself.

You over did it homes
[laughing]

[Chorus]
Don't play games with J cause you'll see
On the sidelines your fans be on mine [Repeat]

It's been a long time coming
But the blood doesn't flow with the wait
As we dead all the damn debate
Anticipate this change gone come
You damn straight
Non stop till my name preceded by the great
I get around like digital Pac
And been around like the ice cream truck on your block
And hold it down with a squirt gun deep in your sink
Spittin around tight wisdom making you think
If you around light sweetheart you can reflect
Don't put it down cause you need art you can respect
I know it sound not quite like what you expect
Type underground meaning not just after the check
If you predict this mist you can hardly detect
Will draw you up plus six then you stand correct
Lost and found no joke if you sleep or neglect
Then suck a dick till it's poking out the back of your neck
Now bring it in

[Chorus]

I heard nice guys finish last
But see this theory doesn't quite explain the reason I'm
Letting y'all rat racers leave the gate ahead of time
And still politely waiting for you at the finish line
Some people find it so amazing how I put a rhyme
Together and bring it to life like Dr. Frankenstein
I hope you can handle the truth cause see I'm frank with mine
So it be seeming like I'm actin kinda stank at times
But see my lines are built for battle like a tank design
Runnin through obstacles like popeye through spinach time
I got some rules and regulations to diminish crime
And if you follow em you could become a friend of mine
Some catch amnesia with their lyrics and remember mine
Then they forget that it's a tool I use to speak my mind
But then they even got the nerve to try to freak my rhymes
But they get ate like they was paint and I was turpentine
Now bring it in

[Chorus]

It's been a long time going
But you still got a bounce in your neck
Till your problems feel neglect
It's incorrect if you still detect all of the stress
From the folks that expect to divide your check
See that's the shit that be making you think
Soon as your ship comes in you'll be ready to sink
The mind state got some scared of leaving their block
Phobiatic they'll be going out like Biggie and Pac
Now meanwhile some will swing it and it come out great
Find a shorty give you wop till you can't see straight
Tell her bounce in the morning she won't even debate
Call her back next night and she just can't wait
Peep the former home alone now he feel irate
Trying to front upon the style that the Live create
You hear the same word twice and wanna file a complaint
Well check the order of the line that'll set things straight
Now bring it in

[Chorus]

________________________________________________________________

So the words to focus on here are the following:

neck
neglect
incorrect
detect
expect
check
think
sink
block
pac
great
straight
debate
wait

They are used the other way around in the first verse.

American Gothic - the original

Little known fact: my friends Ida and Jahan were the inspiration for the original American Gothic painting

Oldurrr

So I made this photoshop for a blog at work. It's about a poker player named Tom Dwan. His nickname is Durrr. This is showing how aged he will be when his current 50,000 hand challenge (for like $1.5 million) with Patrick Antonius is finally over. In other words, it's taking a ridiculously long time.

Here is the official article

Blackalicious - Make you feel that way.

Make you feel that way.

A song that helps when you are dealing with some sad news, as I am currently.

Contest: Name that reference

For hip hop heads, I have a challenge. There is a very brief and subtle reference to another groups lyrics/song in this song. It is at 1:46 and lasts for about 2.5 seconds. When I first heard it it drove me nuts for a while. I knew that he was sampling/referencing something else but I couldn't pinpoint it.
This is not easy but I think you can get it. I believe in you.

I'll give you a hint, there are 5 mc's in the group.

Fat dog. Lazy monkey. I like the t-shirts. It exemplifies good team spirit.
It's funny.

Kimmel ripping Ms. South Carolina

This is an old clip but still enjoyable. The internet can be great. It can also be haunting for people who act retarded on camera and who won't ever escape their unfortunate link-to-fame for the remainder of their lives.

This fucking cat is driving me fuckin crazy

See if you can beat this.

Circle the Cat game

The roots: I can't help it. Intro, Whistler July 19, 2008

The weekend was mid July 2008..................

So this weekend the 215 played in Whistler BC on top of Blackcomb mountain. One week prior I had gone to Vegas to catch them performing at the Hard Rock. Due to some unfortunate extreme donky'ness I wound up missing the first 45 minutes of the show. It is something I will never forgive myself for. Anyway, 7 days later I had the opportunity to redeem myself and made sure to be ready for the start of this show. I always enjoy the creative ways that they start and this one was perhaps one of the best I've seen so far.

So without further adieu. The Deuce Stick and Dynamite!!
Thanks for the video (Nico&Eme)

Stop!

Hammer time!.

lol, some of those people are truly frightened. The ensemble of dancers was quite vast.

Some candid Will Ferrell

It's surprising when actors really open themselves up to the public and let them know how things really are with them. Normally these are a bit too serious for my taste but this particular one shed some light on the guy behind the guy.

Then there is also this. Just plain vicious.

Yo dude, that's awesome. Can I buy one?

Young Liars

Here is an audio/visual tribute to a song that's been in my continuous rotation for the past 2 years and is in my top 3 goto songs when i'm fartin about in the real world. When I see a TV on the Radio concert, the price of admission is covered for me as soon as this song is performed.

This last one is really cool.

THE TALE OF THE HEROES MAC C.

Little Maddy MacC
Was a girl unlike you or me.
In the dead of the night
She had crime to fight
Wish her brother, whom she loved… mostly.

Little Quinn MacC
Was a boy of about age 3
With his sis at his side
On an elephant they’d ride
To stop the latest crime spree.

One night in early December
They learned of a boy named Dismember
He’d steal the heads
Off of dolls and teds
For reasons that no one could remember

When they learned of this awful disgrace
The MacCs had a villain to chase
They jumped on their steed
And rode with great speed
To find the poor souls who’d “lost face”

Though the victims were questioned all day
They really had nothing to say
They just couldn’t speak
Of the villain we speak
For their mouths had been carried away

Then out of a shadowed doorway
A voice said “I’ve something to say!
I saw the whole thing
And I’m willing to sing
Just promise Dismember will pay!”

And out stepped wee Natalie
Owner of Disco Barbie
The dancing queen
Who’d lost her bean
In the midst of this awful crime spree

“I was sitting upstairs on my bed
Telling Barbie it’s time she was wed
When Dismember came in
With a big ugly grin
And relieved my poor doll of her head!”

“Well tell us, which way did he flee?”
Yelled our crime fighting heroes MacC
“He ran out that door,
But the bag he held tore
So just follow the trail that you see.”

Sure enough when they looked out the door
There was a trail they’d not seen before
It was made up of oodles
Of tiny toy’s noodles
And our heroes were stumped no more.

“To the elephant!” cried little man Quinn
“Now we surely shall win!”
So they jumped on their beast
And turned to face east
The direction the trail led in.

Onwards the elephant ran
Till they reached the heart of Japan!
Where in a dark cave
They discovered the knave
And challenged him to fight like a man.

Then out the evil one slunk
With a smell as foul as a skunk
He was holding a sword
And was out of his gourd!
And was, quite obviously, drunk.

“Oh please, I don’t want any trouble
My life has turned into such rubble.”
Then he fell on his bum
And said swigging rum
“Are there four of you, or am I seeing double?”

Our heroes knew not what to think
At the piteous state of this fink
Clearly a fight
Just wouldn’t be right
With a boy so far gone with the drink

A glance was exchanged ‘tween the two
And suddenly they knew what to do
They’d get the lad sober
If it took till October
And find out what made him so blue.

Twelve months and twelve steps later
We check in with our evil doll hater
He’s doing just fine
And he’s off of the wine
And he no longer acts like Darth Vader.

“It’s just, I was misunderstood”
Said our villain, now lately turned good.
“But these two took the time
To look in to my crime
And they treat me the way that folk should.”

So if ever you come ‘cross a thug
Who makes you feel small as a bug
Quinn and Maddy
Say he’s not such a baddy
He may just need a good hug.

Glorified extreme halucinigenics'ing. Find the frog. Absorb it's juice.

The website vbs.tv has some insane shit. This documentary is a perfect example of insane shit. The skeleton/dude goes into the middle of the Amazon rain forest in search of a frog that fucks you up in the brain and stomach. It's a 9 part documentary. Some parts are difficult to watch and his throaty voice might make you wanna impale yourself. But after a while, hey, it ain't so bad.

This is just fascinating for so many reasons. The culture of the people who live in these remote places is surreal to my sheltered first-world eyes. And those fuckin mosquitos, my god, I could feel the pain through the computer. Incomprehensible irritation. This Hamilton Morris character is taking nature and drug obsession to a weird level.

This is the original link

Pervert

This is hilarious and certainly enhanced by the very fitting sound effects.
I think this should give new meaning to the dog name "snoopy". Maybe even a full name like "Snoopy in yr Poopy".

I doubt this dog was even trained. I'd wager more on the likelihood that he is a reincarnation of the peeper in the first scene of Little Nicky

First Scene of Little Nicky - Luvitz the Peeper

An old Welsh witch

Good staring contest starting at 4:53. If you can't handle a staredown than perhaps you should proceed with caution here.
Don't blink. If you do, the witch wins.

But yea, I really fuckin love this song. The intensity is gripping. She does a good job of really using body language to convey some sort of possessed mind state.

A few amusing videos

Real or fake? Some are definitely real. And the basic soccer skills that these guys show, not to mention their acrobatic athleticism, is astounding. The very last one with the giant kickbomb that goes in looks edited/doctored/fake but everything else looks really cool

This is also quite good. Brings some life to the otherwise mind numbing pre-flight announcements. I was on a couple WestJet flights recently and noticed that they are making an effort to be more entertaining/funny on the intercom. It's a good twist and effectively lightens the mood.

And now that I think of it, this wholesome flight rap reminds me of this Will Smith Family Guy clip that always makes me chuckle.
