Saw this guy on College Humour. Pretty good shit so I looked him up. His style is solid. Plus his name is Hannibal, that's just fucked.

Humans and the things they can do

Somethings just need to be seen to be believed. How does someone even get to this level of skill? I'd like to see a list of broken bones and concussions from this guy's past 20 years. These tricks are as wild as they are difficult.

Sweet cocktail-making skills

Generally speaking this "Cocktail" shit doesn't impress me that much. It's certainly a cool talent but high end jugglers perform superior feats. This, however, was pretty damn impressive...and creative.

Sports (psychology) goggles?

I read an interesting article today on the topic of perception/confidence for athletes and how it impacts their performance.

The article came from Wired.com

The following is an excerpt from that article:
_________________________________________
Flubbing a field goal kick doesn’t just bruise your ego — new research shows it may actually change how your brain sees the goal posts.

In a study of 23 non-football athletes who each kicked 10 field goals, researchers found that players’ performance directly affected their perception of the size of the goal: After a series of missed kicks, athletes perceived the post to be taller and more narrow than before, while successful kicks made the post appear larger-than-life.

Professional athletes have long claimed that their perception changes when they’re playing well — they start hitting baseballs as large as grapefruits, or aiming at golf holes the size of a bucket — but many scientists have been slow to accept that performance can alter visual perception.

“The reason why this is so radical is that perception has always been conceived as being all about information received by the eye,” said pychology researcher Jessica Witt of Purdue University, who co-authored the paper published last month in Perception. “In my studies we keep all the optical information constant, so the eye is seeing the exact same info — but it looks different depending on performance.”

_________________________________________

It got me to thinkin', and that usually leads to trouble.

The future of sports will no doubt be quite technologically advanced and with that change so to will come advances in sports psychology and methods of preparation and training. From what the Wired.com article described, it is clear that confidence (or sometimes lack thereof) can influence how we perform, especially in high pressure situations. That is certainly not a novel concept but viewing the topic from a cognition and visual perception standpoint does change things. The knowledge of how to control and manipulate this sort of brain functionality can open some massive doors in the field of sports psychology and athletic training.

My crystal ball is flashing visions of a Minority Report style world where holograms of virtual training grounds hover around, spatially encompassing athletes with footage of past and future performances in the hours before a big event.

Even in the shorter term there are means for this to be realistically applied.

Imagine, for example, a field goal kicker who took to the practice field with custom built and designed glasses [there is a great documentary on something similar to this called Cyberman. here is a link]that record every kick you made in practice for the entire week leading up to the game. Now imagine this footage, which is recording from the precise vantage point as that by which he views his entire kicking motion from snap to follow through, can be edited to simulate a real game environment.

If the kicker could go through repeated clips of successful (simulated) kicks before a game his confidence on the field, as per the article's claims, would be at it's peak. In fewer words, it's like pregame preparation/meditation made easy and accurate.

This would be really good for basketball players as well. Imagine Shaq going through a video of himself knocking down 25 straight freethrows!!?!

Kim Peak - the origin of Rain Man

This is a good documentary on the person who was the inspiration behind the character Rain Man.

Limitless memory essentially.... at birth they swapped his brain with a sponge. The relationship he has with his dad is nice, but 100% co-dependent. Will be sad when he will find himself alone.

Had a skit idea. Thought the best people to potentially make the magic happen on screen were the good people at College Humour dot com. So I emailed them.

Thoughts?

Dear College Humour,

You guys are neat. I think you are swell. Your site makes me laugh and so does your comedy.

Submission:

i like your cross-over/amalgamations skits.
Would you consider doing one that combines the movies "where the wild things are" with the movie "wild things".

potential for some serious hilariosity there. Especially if you secksify it up with hotties that have akin hottiness to that of denise richards and neve campbell.

Super Fan

Built to Spill is coming to Vancouver this week. I'm excited to see them for the second time. And in the lead up to any concert, it isn't too uncommon for fans to use youtube as the warm up tool to "get in the zone" before a show. So, that being said, I was cruising the utubies and cam across this gem. I can only hope and pray that come Wednesday night I am feeling the music as much as the guy here in the hat. He is awesome. Plain and simple.

Holy Fuck. No, really, that's their name

I really enjoy their music. The name of the band is questionable given the fact that the explicit nature of it limits some of their potential audience/sales.... but whatever, i dont mind.

$6,200,000 commercial

This is the world's most costly Advertisement and the winner of this year's (2008) best Ad of the world.

It took 606 takes and re-takes to make this commercial and the total cost was $ 6.2 million for this 90 second commercial. Worth it in my opinion. Domino effect cannot be restricted by cost. Ever. Dominoes rule and anything that acts like dominoes rules by default.

Everything is real with no graphics used and still look at the precision. The team that made this commercial won many awards.

Rep(360)orter

Life is a gigantic memory album now thanks to youtube and other uploading sites. So much awesomeness is captured and shared. I wonder how much cool shit happened before video cameras were invented that would totally tear ass on youtube had someone been there to record it. Like imagine Edison's face when he changed the first light bulb. And I'm sure some awesome Dinosaur bloopers went down back in the day that weren't ever able to ride the wave of Dino-folklore and subsequently faded quietly into the intangible realm of things that went down that no one will ever know about etc.

Super memory

This is a quick article sent to me by the birdman (my dad).
4 people in the world (possibly more) have what is known as Super Memory. It pretty much is what it sounds like. They remember everything they learn and it usual begins at a certain age.

Some of them seem to find their condition burdensome while others cherish their unique brain power.

More from TED website

Quite interesting lecture on incentive and human nature. Very big implications when economics and management is considered.

A video from the website TED.com

Career analyst Dan Pink examines the puzzle of motivation, starting with a fact that social scientists know but most managers don't: Traditional rewards aren't always as effective as we think. Listen for illuminating stories -- and maybe, a way forward.

About Dan Pink

Bidding adieu to his last "real job" as Al Gore's speechwriter, Dan Pink went freelance to spark a right-brain revolution in the career marketplace.

Beatbox Dub FX 10/10/2008 'Love Someone'

Well done. I'm still not sure how the timing is done so perfectly with the looping but every time I see something like this the people somehow seem to make magic out of it. This one is particularly good. The sound is quite sharp given the fact it's a live outdoor performance.

Pervy old English TV Show

I highly doubt they would be allowed to get away with this on public television now but when we were kids this shit flew right over our heads.

JT83

Jason Tucker catch. Just felt like reliving this.
My favourite Eskimo receiver of all-time. He consistently made mind-boggling catches like this.

Check the level of difficulty on this catch. First he has to change the shoulder he is looking over at full speed and maintain his route and re-find the ball in the air. That is not easy. Then, with one hand, he stretches out and pulls in a pass that is easily bombed over 50 yards with a defender behind him and one approaching at full-throttle from the side. The concentration level is off the charts.

Factor all of that in with the fact that he gets hit from the side just as he is trying to coral the ball into his body with less than a minute to go with his team down 4. Watch the way he switches hands to absorb the fall before he hits the ground. Incredible.

Sheeeiiiiit. JT, you sir, are the man!

The Other Team: hoorah!

Pretty funny parody. Coach losing it is pretty funny.

This speaks for itself. Needless to say, the comments on youtube have been disabled for this. What an absolutely wild ritual this is. How does it start and how is it justified? Q-Tip: Life is Better

[if this video seems strange for the first minute it is because Q-tip isn't actually on stage. Wait for the ending and it'll make more sense.]

This was Thursday July 9th in the Miles Davis Hall at the Montreux Jazz Festival in beautiful Montreux Switzerland. This was the very end of the show when Q-tip busted into the crowd and meandered through as the whole place chanted "Life is Better" about 374 times. The show was on fullblast from start to finish. It was just awesome. Myself and my amigos (Keefer and Knig) were about 1 meter behind and to the left on the screen.

Lost at Birth = The perfect song for Terminator Salvation

About half an hour after seeing Terminator Salvation my 6 year old Ipod shuffle (2gigs ftw!), with whom I have an ongoing conversation which is surprisingly animated, decided to show me what he thought would have been the perfect closing credits song for the movie. I had to agree.

"The Future holds nothing else but confrontation."
"Get back cause he wax the tracks the Terminator"

Clear the way for the prophets of rage
Engagin' on the stage, on a track
Tell jack stay in the back
I was born
Every level I'm on
You're warned
Just in case you forgot
I pump in kilowatts
To let 'em know which direction
To go what's up I wanna know
I test the front row
Forgiven the givin' while the livin' is livin' it up
So many people is sleepin' while standin' up
Not dressed to impress or fess it
That's it text to the brain like fedex
Treated one and the same
'cause the name of the game
Don't give 'em checks above necks
Some don't realize we're on the same side
Some livin in the city
Suburbs or projects
But we're livin' in a different time
Some speed, some lead
While some jus' pump rhymes
Then again all in da same gang
Info to flow
And heal all below
Let's go and find
The piece of mind that's taken
Or else the black
starts breakin'
Public enemy no.1

Telling Stories

Original is better than the live I think. Here are both. Great song. Truly.

There is fiction in the space between
The lines on your page of memories
Write it down but it doesn't mean
You're not just telling stories

There is fiction in the space between
You and reality
You will do and say anything
To make your everyday life
Seem less mundane
There is fiction in the space between
You and me

There's a science fiction in the space between
You and me
A fabrication of a grand scheme
Where I am the scary monster
I eat the city and as I leave the scene
In my spaceship I am laughing
In your remembrance of your bad dream
There's no one but you standing

Leave the pity and the blame
For the ones who do not speak
You write the words to get respect and compassion
And for posterity
You write the words and make believe
There is truth in the space between

There is fiction in the space between
You and everybody
Give us all what we need
Give us one more sad sordid story
But in the fiction of the space between
Sometimes a lie is the best thing
Sometimes a lie is the best thing

Rising Down live - wow wow wee wa

I've seen 3 roots shows since Rising Down came out. Each time I waited patiently for them to play the title track "Rising Down". Unfortunately it wasn't in the cards. Nor was it on the playlist for the night. Today I came across this and can only say that the way they spice it up is better than I could have predicted. So tight. Nicely tied in with Rising Up in this clip too.

Enjoy.

And just to show the versatility and an excuse to ad an extra video:

The Grand Return - cut track from Rising Down album

I can't believe this. This song was cut from Rising Down. Damn. That's too bad. I know they snipped off that Birthday Girl song from the N.American release but I never heard this shit before. I like it.

Plus, wow, I really would have enjoyed seeing this live.

Q-tip: Let's Stride

Came across this today. Had never heard it before.
Going to see 'tip in July in Switzerland. Quite excited for that especially since I think The Renaissance is one of the best albums of 2009.

Pearl Jam - Got Some

Audio from the live performance they did on the very first episode of the new Tonight Show with Coco - a.k.a. Conan - a.k.a. The Cone Zone.

This song has grown on me. I think I needed to hear it more than see it to really soak it in because it's brand new. I wonder if it will be much different on the album? hmmm

When the stress burns my brain...

Just like Acid Raindrops...

Zee Avi

She has nice style and voice. I think it's great how musicians can get exposure and build a career with youtube and the webby. Lots of talent floating around.

Who? Well, it doesn't really matter.

I don't really know who this fool is. My guess is he has something to do with the R&B scene or he's a wanna be mc. Given the fact that his freestyle in this video is at a Flavour Flav level I'm fairly certain that if he is in fact an "mc" it won't be for very long.

At any rate, this is hilarious. Wait til the end. If you haven't seen this before, you're in for a treat.

Jigga - D.O.A

Death of Autotune. New Jigga. On some heavy electro-geetar. Nice.

Notice that he starts with

"No-ID on the track...now let the story begin."

In Kanye's song about Jay-z called Big Brother, Kanye says

"
My big brother was Big's brother
Used to be Dame and Bigs brother
Who was hip hop brother
Who was No I.D friend
No I.D My mentor
Now let the story begin"
